provide a forum for discussion and exchange on topics in
philosophy and religion--especially where these two disciplines
meet. Like the Society of Christian Philosophers in the United
States, the Canadian Society is ecumenical in composition with
respect to Christian denomination, theological perspective and
philosophical orientation. Participation in its meetings has,
however, always been open to those who do not share its Christian
commitment.

A nonpartisan, nonsectarian organization dedicated
to research and education at the intersection of ethics and
international affairs. Programs and publications provoke
thinking and dialogue about the urgent and complex ethical
dilemmas involved in international decision making. Policymakers,
researchers, educators, students, and the general public draw upon
the Council’s resources to explore the connections between moral
commitments and political reality and to put their understanding
into practice in their public lives.

A thinker who is situated within the Western
tradition must say with Edmund Husserl, "How can we avoid it
...we are the functionaries of humanity." The Center for
Advanced Research in Phenomenology, Inc. accepts this
responsibility and seeks actively to further the effort it
entails. Husserl also valued the mutual respect and support to be
derived from philosophers, scholars, and scientists working
together in a community of common ideals and purposes. The Center
uses all means to foster, extend, and deepen phenomenology and
kindred continental thought in philosophy, the social sciences,
and the humanities wherever it can.

common sense,

questions; contemporary political, social, and cultural problems
and policies; current scientific and technological issues and
speculations; challenges to the "conventional" wisdom,
"popular" ideologies, and "accepted" paradigms
of our culture; and the application of common sense realistic
principles to all human affairs.

for Bioethics is to advance and disseminate knowledge concerning
ethical issues in health care and the life sciences. The
Center sponsors Publications.

University at Carbondale was established in 1961 as the
"Dewey Project." In the course of collecting and editing
Dewey's works, the Center amassed a wealth of source materials for
the study of America's quintessential philosopher-educator, John
Dewey. By virtue of its publications and research, the Center has
become the international focal point for research on Dewey's life
and work. Its location at the University makes it possible for
visitors to take advantage of the resources and professional
expertise of the faculty and staff of the Department of
Philosophy, the College of Education, Special Collections in
Morris Library, and the Southern Illinois University Press.

Center for the Philosophy of Nature and Science
Studies (in Danish: Center for Naturfilosofi og Videnskabsstudier,
CNV) involves a small group of scientists, philosophers of science
and researchers engaged in the interdisciplinary field denominated
here as philosophy of nature and science studies, including
history, philosophy and sociology of science.
|
|
The Center for Philosophy of Science exists to
promote scholarship and research, to encourage scholarly
exchanges, and to foster publications in the philosophy of science
as well as in philosophically informed history of science and
related fields. The Center is dedicated to bridging the gulf
between the sciences and the humanities, and to helping to develop
and disseminate a philosophical understanding and appreciation of
the sciences. The Center pursues its mission not only locally and
regionally, but also nationally and internationally. Like other
centers at the University of Pittsburgh, the Center for Philosophy
of Science is a unit for research rather than teaching.
Nevertheless, through its many undertakings and initiatives, the
Center substantially enriches the graduate programs in the
Department of History and Philosophy of Science and in the
Department of Philosophy. Some of these Center activities also
enrich the undergraduate programs of the University, especially
undergraduate honors programs.

|
The Center for Process Studies contributes to the
development of a new cultural paradigm influenced by a relational
worldview. As a resource for scholars and other professionals the
Center coordinates multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary
research on pressing issues, seeking to avoid the inertia and
limitations of segregated university disciplines. Where other new
paradigm institutes focus on singular issues--like ecology,
agriculture, feminism, race and class, decentralized political
economic theory, or appropriate technology--a typical process
focus is to integrate these issues through a non-dualistic
worldview applicable to a wide range of problems. A process
procedure of mutual transformation of perspectives uniquely
integrates science, religion, ethics, and aesthetics, generating a
wider perspective that includes feminist, ecological, political,
economic and other issues into a unity that takes account of
issues beyond immediate concern for itself.

The Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition
is an interdisciplinary center for research in cognitive science,
directed by Douglas
Hofstadter. CRCC is affiliated with the Cognitive
Science Program at IU, and has close ties with the Computer
Science Department. CRCC research focuses mainly on emergent
computational models of creative analogical thinking and its
subcognitive substrate -- namely, fluid concepts. Several computer
programs modeling the interplay between concepts and perception in
the course of analogy-making have been developed; these include
the Copycat
and Tabletop programs. The Letter
Spirit project, modeling the perception and creation of style
in the world of letterforms, is currently in the developmental
stages. The group also conducts research (mostly
non-computational) in a number of other areas of cognitive
science, including error-making, creative translation, scientific
discovery, musical composition, the comprehension and invention of
jokes, the nature of sexist language and default imagery,
philosophy of mind, and foundations of artificial intelligence.

The Center for the Study of Ethics in the
Professions was established in 1976 to promote research and
teaching on practical moral problems in the professions. The first
interdisciplinary center for ethics to focus on the professions,
CSEP continues to be one of the nation's leading centers for
practical and professional ethics. It is known for its work on
ethics in engineering and science and in related areas of
business.
CSEP promotes innovative teaching. It generated
professional ethics courses at IIT and assists faculty at other
universities to prepare for teaching professional ethics and to
develop courses and programs. CSEP's Ethics Across the Curriculum
project, supported by a grant from the National Science
Foundation, prepares instructors to integrate ethics in ordinary
courses. The project includes workshops for IIT faculty,
professional society representatives concerned with continuing
education, and faculty from other institutions.
The Center sponsors Publications.
