Takoma Park Event Draws Enthusiastic Response
NOW co-founder Sonia Pressman Fuentes
presented her talk "From Immigrant to Feminist: My Role in the
Women's Rights Movement" to a full house on October 8 at the Takoma
Park Campus, kicking off the Women's Studies Speaker
Series at Takoma Park. According to Esther Schwartz-McKinzie,
Women's Studies coordinator, Fuentes was met with applause and
intelligent questions from MC students who were moved by her analysis
of what it means to be an immigrant in America, and by her call
to personal and political action. Click
here for a transcript of Fuentes' talk.

her talk at the campus as a "marvelous experience." Read
more of her praises below...
Sonia
Pressman Fuentes' reactions about her experience at Takoma Park
Campus...
"I
cannot begin to tell you what a marvelous experience it was
last night. I'm still on a high from it. The TP campus is
a very special place.
All
things start with Esther Schwartz-McKinzie, who is such a
dynamic, can-do, warm and fantastic person.
When
I got to the College, I spent a few minutes chatting in the
office of Dr. Clarence Porter. He couldn't have been nicer
to me and he later gave me an excellent introduction that
was just right (I do not like long introductions.)
Jim
Walters.warned me beforehand that students at TP don't like
to come back for evening programs after they've left for the
day. So it was delightful to walk into the room and find what
appeared to be every seat taken, stretching back a considerable
distance to the end of the room.
The
students and faculty there were incredibly responsive to what
I had to say. Since I spoke about my feelings in being an
immigrant, and TP's students come from 100 different countries,
my remarks resonated with them. They were eager, enthusiastic,
and very welcoming. It was also a great pleasure speaking
to them individually when they came by to have me sign my
books.
.though I've been giving talks since 1965, I have not had
an experience that tops this one."

students and faculty there were incredibly responsive to what
