Sonia Pressman Fuentes

This picture of Sonia appears on page 36 of the Summer 2015 magazine, Jewish Currents, a progressive, secular voice, as part of an article called “The Jewish Left: A Visual History, Part Two: 1946-2015,” written by the editorial board of that magazine. The text under the picture reads in pertinent part (as corrected here):

“Sonia Pressman (Fuentes), one of several Jews among the founders of the National Organization for Women, shaking hands with President Lyndon Baines Johnson at the White House after the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, known as the Fair Housing Act.”

President Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act in April 1968. At that time, Sonia was a lawyer in the Office of the General Counsel at the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission), was invited to the signing, and shook hands with the President and First Lady thereafter. Ahead of Sonia, shaking hands with the First Lady, is Stephen Shulman, the second chairman of the EEOC.
